AI consulting in Darwin, from a firm that builds the systems

NTDG is a Darwin-headquartered technology firm. We work out where AI genuinely fits in your operations, build and integrate it, and tell you plainly when it is not worth building yet.

What we actually do

There are three kinds of firm offering AI help, and they are not competing for the same job. Some resell and configure existing tools. Some produce readiness assessments and governance frameworks. Some build and integrate systems. NTDG is in the third group, and the advisory work exists because clients kept asking what should be built before anyone could sensibly quote building it.

In practice that means the firm designs, builds and experimentally tests AI-driven platforms for business operations, and validates them inside the group’s own operating companies before wider release. The engineering vantage point mostly shows up as a willingness to say that something will not work yet.

If a well-chosen off-the-shelf product would solve your problem, the useful answer is to say so. That is cheaper for everyone than a discovery phase that arrives at the same place six weeks later.

What is genuinely different about building for the Territory

Some of the local-knowledge claim in this market is marketing. Some of it is real, and it concentrates in four places. None of them change the strategy — they change the design.

Connectivity that is not uniform

Outside the main centres, bandwidth and reliability vary. Any process that assumes a live connection at the moment of decision will work in Darwin and fail in Katherine or on site. Systems we build queue, retry and degrade rather than stall.

Distributed and rostered workforces

Teams spread across sites and rosters cannot be supported by a workflow that needs a specialist available to resolve exceptions within the hour. Exception handling has to work across a swing, not a shift.

Procurement cycles that dominate

A large share of Territory work is tied to government, defence, resources and tourism procurement. That shapes which internal processes are worth automating and when the work can realistically be scheduled.

A small specialist labour market

Losing one experienced person can remove a genuine capability. That argues for systems that document how work is done rather than ones only their builder understands — and for handing over credentials and code, not holding them.

How an engagement runs

The sequence matters more than the tooling. Building before measuring is the most expensive mistake available in this field, because the build is the part that is hard to reverse.

01

One conversation, no charge

What the business does, what is slow, and what you have already tried. Often this ends with a recommendation to buy a product rather than engage anyone, which is the cheapest useful answer available.

02

Pick one task and measure it

A task that repeats weekly, has a baseline figure you can state, and where a wrong answer is an edit rather than an incident. We record the figure before anything changes.

03

Trial before building

Two to four weeks running the task with AI assistance and no integration work. The output is the measured change plus a list of every case where it was wrong and why — which is what a specification is actually made of.

04

Build only what the trial justified

Integration, automation and the human checkpoints the failure list revealed. Credentials, repositories and infrastructure are in your name from the first commit.

Where we work

NTDG is based in Darwin and works across the Northern Territory — Darwin, Palmerston, the rural area, Katherine, Nhulunbuy, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs — as well as with clients elsewhere in Australia who engage the firm remotely.

Being in Darwin matters for two practical reasons rather than as a loyalty argument: the operating constraints above are assumptions we hold by default rather than things that have to be explained to us, and we are in the same time zone as the people who have to use what gets built.

Frequently asked

Do you actually work in Darwin, or just service it remotely?

NTDG is headquartered in Darwin at Level 1, 18-20 Knuckey Street. The firm was founded and operates from the Northern Territory, and the group it belongs to runs operating businesses here. Clients elsewhere in Australia are served remotely.

What size business do you work with?

Mostly small and medium Australian businesses, including NT operators with distributed or remote teams. The determining factor is not headcount but whether the problem involves connecting AI to systems you already run, which is where the work is worth paying for.

What does an engagement cost?

NTDG quotes a fixed price per engagement rather than from a rate card, because cost is driven by how many systems are involved and how well the process is currently documented. Send an outline of the process and you get a fixed figure and a defined scope back.

Can you help if we have no idea where to start?

That is the usual starting point. The first step is identifying one repeated task with a measurable baseline and a recoverable failure mode, then trialling it before anything is built. Frequently the recommendation is that an off-the-shelf tool will do the job and no build is needed.

Do you build systems or only advise?

Both, and the advisory work exists because of the build work. NTDG designs, builds and tests AI-driven platforms for business operations and validates them inside the group’s own operating companies before wider release.

Will the recommendations work with unreliable connectivity?

They have to. A workflow that assumes constant connectivity and same-day specialist availability works in a demonstration and fails at a remote site. Designing for graceful degradation is a standing constraint on NT work rather than an optional extra.

Tell us what is slow and we will tell you whether AI helps

Send an outline of the process and what you run it on. You get a straight assessment and, if it is worth doing, a fixed-price scope within three business days.
